Artist Statement
I am a professional mixed media artist. My work incorporates paint, ceramics, wood, metal, found objects, and fabric, ranging from large sculptures to set designs to murals. My art has been exhibited in galleries nationwide.
The art I create is colorful, experimental, and expressionistic. It often focuses on matters of intensely personal meaning to me, such as climate change and its impact on socio-economically challenged and marginalized communities. Woven inextricably into my work are themes of feminism, identity, gender, race, bias, love, self-love, and multi-culturalism. For me, art can be both lighthearted and serious, decorative and utilitarian.
I am in my studio often, creating new bodies of work. Childlike playfulness combined with deep exploration, critical thinking, and self-empowerment characterize my arti and my approach to it. Fluidity defines my sense of self and also informs my ideas and choice of materials.
I have an equal love for making art by myself and with others and continuously expand my vision and practice by taking workshops, training in new media, and working collaboratively with other artists in community art projects. Some of the work on this page was made for site-specific installations and gardens.
